This is Oregon's published 2026 season, the whole state at once. A pin reads its unit or deer hunt area off the map and cuts this to the seasons, arms and limits that apply there.

Oregon deer seasons

2026

1 antlered deer per licence year. One deer tag a year, unless a second is drawn. In western Oregon the general any-legal-weapon and general archery tags are bought over the counter and take one buck with a visible antler; in eastern Oregon every deer tag is a controlled 100 series tag drawn for a single hunt area, and the tag names the hunt. White-tailed deer are illegal to harvest in every western Oregon unit except controlled hunts in Melrose (#23) that list them in the bag limit. Antlerless deer hunting is the 600 series and is not carried here. 2026 Oregon Big Game Hunting Regulations, printed pp. 30-43.

    • In western Oregon this is the General Any Legal Weapon Western Oregon Tag, bought over the counter: units 10 to 30, 3 October to 6 November, one buck with a visible antler.
    • Eastern Oregon has no general deer season. Every eastern tag is a controlled 100 series tag drawn for one hunt area, applications close in May, and the tag sale deadline is the day before the hunt begins.
    • "It is unlawful to hunt with a centerfire rifle without a valid (used or unused) deer or elk tag for certain time periods and areas" — the Eastern Buck Deer restriction runs 3 to 14 October in WMUs 31-77. Printed p. 19.
    • White-tailed deer are illegal to harvest in every western Oregon unit except controlled hunts in the Melrose Unit (#23) that specifically list white-tailed deer in the bag limit.
    • "Game mammals may only be hunted from 1/2 hour before sunrise to 1/2 hour after sunset." Printed p. 15.
    • Oregon requires hunter orange only of hunters under 18: "No person younger than 18 years of age shall hunt with any firearm for any game mammal or upland game bird (excluding turkey) unless the person is wearing in a manner visible from all directions a hat or exterior garment of hunter orange." Printed p. 22.

    • The western general archery season is over the counter on a General Archery Season Western Oregon Deer Tag, and its dates vary unit by unit more than the rifle season's do. Unit 26 is the odd one: any legal archery weapon in the August block, traditional archery equipment only in the November one.
    • Unit 21 is split. South Indigo — a boundary described in prose on printed p. 33 — runs only the August block; the northern portion of the unit runs the November block as well. The app resolves to the whole unit and carries both.
    • Eastern Oregon has no general deer season. Every eastern tag is a controlled 100 series tag drawn for one hunt area, applications close in May, and the tag sale deadline is the day before the hunt begins.

New This Season

What changed since last year, and is therefore easiest to get wrong.

  • Eastern Oregon deer hunts are now structured on Deer Hunt Areas rather than wildlife management units — forty-three of them, with codes like NE-03 and DG-04.
  • There are 9 per cent fewer mule deer tags for the 100 series buck hunts across eastern Oregon, and 8 per cent fewer 600 series antlerless tags statewide.
  • Several north-eastern hunt areas now run separate mule deer and white-tailed deer bag limits on separate tags.
  • The Northeast 01 and Northeast 02 whitetail muzzleloader hunts in December are CWD sampling hunts.

An adult firearm hunter in Oregon is under no orange requirement at all, which is unusual in the west and worth knowing before you plan around it.

Two Oregons

West of the Cascades a hunter buys a General Any Legal Weapon Western Oregon Tag or a General Archery Season Western Oregon Deer Tag and hunts units 10 to 30. East of them there is no general season at all.

"Starting in 2026, Eastern Oregon deer hunts will be structured based on Deer Hunt Areas, not WMUs, to reflect mule deer biology and allow for more accurate monitoring and management."

  • The hunt area is the entire wildlife management unit or deer hunt area unless the hunt name carries an asterisk.
  • The tag sale deadline for a controlled hunt is the day before the hunt begins.

White-tailed deer

"White-tailed deer are illegal to harvest in all Western Oregon units except controlled hunts in the Melrose Unit (#23) that specifically list white-tailed deer in the bag limit."

In north-eastern Oregon the position reverses: Elkhorn, Northeast and South Wallowas hunt areas run separate whitetail hunts on separate tags, and a mule deer tag is not valid on a whitetail there.

Vehicles, aircraft and drones

Every deer must be reported by 31 January 2027 for a tag used in 2026, and by 15 April for the following year's preference points.

  • Failing to report costs a $25 fee on your next licence purchase.

Chronic Wasting Disease

Chronic wasting disease has not yet been detected in Oregon. ODFW runs a testing programme and the Northeast 01 and Northeast 02 whitetail muzzleloader hunts in December are sampling hunts.

  • Four ways to have an animal tested: an appointment at an ODFW field office, a drop barrel, a participating taxidermist or meat processor, or a check station.
  • The December Northeast 01 and Northeast 02 whitetail muzzleloader hunts are CWD sampling hunts.
  • Carcass import restrictions apply to deer, elk and moose brought in from other states.

Where This App Is Coarser Than the Digest

Said plainly, because an absence is easy to read as a permission.

  • Tag quotas and draw statistics are not carried. The regulations print 2026 tag numbers and 2025 first-choice applicants against every controlled hunt; both are draw facts rather than field facts.
  • Antlerless deer hunting is not here. Oregon's 600 series antlerless hunts run on their own dates in their own areas, printed pp. 42-43, and only the buck seasons are carried.
  • Hunt boundaries marked with an asterisk are narrower than the unit or hunt area they sit in — the regulations describe them in prose on printed p. 94. A pin near one of those lines may be shown a hunt that does not run on that exact ground. The South Indigo split of unit 21 is the same problem in the west.
  • The rut date is an estimate. ODFW publishes no peak breeding figure.
  • The book was read from the State Library of Oregon's copy in the state publications repository, because ODFW's own article path for it returns 404. It is the same book; if the two ever differ, ODFW's is the one that governs.
